Sharp to Supply Samsung with IGZO Panels; Where does this leaves Apple?
According to a report from Digitimes, Sharp is set to provide Samsung with IGZO panels, according to information from sources.
“Sharp has plans to offer 11.6-inch IGZO notebook panels to Samsung Electronics, but have yet to state when Samsung would be expected to release products featuring the technology,” Julian Ho and Alex Wolfgram report for Digitimes.
The question here, is where does this new partnership leaves Apple? It has been reported that Apple is very interesting in procuring IGZO panels from Sharp for its mobiles. However, the poor manufacturing yield rate of the IGZO panels has been a problem.
If this is true, it is highly unlikely Sharp will be able to produce enough of these panels to supply both Samsung and Apple.
However, it is important to note that Digitimes appears to contradict an earlier report on this matter. The website recently reported that Samsung was not interesting in Sharp’s IGZO technology, after acquiring a stake in the Japanese company early this year.
I guess only time will tell how this all play out.
