After Tim Cook’s apology and Apple subsequently directing people to use other Maps apps, Google appears to be taking up the slack. According to iPhoneinCanada the Google has now add street view to their Web base map application. This was touted by Walt Mossberg a few days ago during a review of the map apps on the Android smartphone.
This is what Mossberg said in his piece:
In fact, Google plans to announce on Thursday that it is adding its popular Street View feature, missing from Apple’s maps, to the Web version of Google Maps accessed from the iPhone and iPad. I tested this addition, which displays 360-degree photographic street views of selected locations, and interior photographic views of certain businesses, using sample links Google sent me. These links worked well, allowing me to see the locations and pan around with a finger.
Also, I believe Google is working on a new Google Maps app for the Apple platform, one that would be offered as an optional download.
The iPhoneinCanada report stated that the Google Maps app Street View has gone live late Wednesday night PDT. Testing by iPhoneinCanada illustrated that the functionality is fairly straightforward as yet and not available in all areas as yet.
The reported stated, “our own tests with Google Street View via the Google Maps web app were very straightforward. Just load up the maps.google.com web app in mobile Safari, tap on a location and a new bottom bar emerges with an icon of a person. Tap that and voila–you have Street View, which opens up in a new tab displaying the URL maps.gstatic.com.”
