Can’t Open App Store And Preview After Updating To OS X Mavericks; Here’s A Solution

  • December 16, 2013

Since installing OS X Mavericks beta on my MacBook Air, I’ve had numerous issues with the new softwares. The most frustrating was that the App Store, Mail, Preview and a few other apps won’t open, and if by some miracle the app did open, it will crash soon after. As a result I was very hesitant in installing OS X Mavericks on my main computer – iMac.

Until now.

This weekend I’ve stumbled across this solution to stop App Store, Mail, Preview and other apps from crashing in OS X Mavericks by LucasVollebergh, in Apple Support Communities:

What to do to fix it:

  • Reboot and hold cmd+R (get’s your mac in recovery mode)
  • Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue. (This won’t delete any files or software, only replace the osx files)
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk
  • DONE!

But here’s the thing – speaking from my personal experience, you need to remove or update CleanMyMac App if you have it installed on your system. This is a great app which has served me well in the past, but unfortunately the version I was using wasn’t playing nice with OS X Mavericks. According to the developers – MacPaw, CleanMyMac 2 is out and this is compatible with OS X Mavericks.

I’ve decided to move  on to Disk Doctor, which has been good so far.

If you are still not able to open Preview app after updating to OS X Mavericks, going to System Preference >> General>>Check box – Close windows when quitting an application. This should bring the Preview app back to life.
