Microsoft has claimed to replace the laptop market with its new launch—Microsoft Surface Pro 3! It is the latest hybrid model from Microsoft, which might make it easier for the users to conclude whether they want to go for a laptop or a tablet.
Few years back, it was an issue to carry a desktop while travelling and the necessity of having a computing device has paved the way for the developers to invent a laptop. Gradually, it is becoming difficult for a traveller to burden his/her luggage with a laptop and he/she has begun to prefer tablets. However, the drawback of a tablet is it doesn’t provide the features that can be provided by the laptops.
Microsoft has taken a step ahead and thought of reducing the burden of the travellers by giving you a tablet that will not let you miss the laptop. Microsoft is confident that Surface Pro 3 will be able to meet up the needs that are expected from a laptop. However, it is you who has to decide whether it can satisfy the laptop lovers.
Before getting started with this, let us tell you that Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 is the third attempt of its kind. It is a hybrid model and the price starts from $799.
Of all the features, you got to appreciate Microsoft for developing this thinner and lighter version despite of the fact that it has larger screen than its elder brothers. The screen size has grown from 10.6 inches to 12 inches. The body is of the same magnesium alloy and a gap runs around this device, so that the heat can be vented easily.
Hinge at the back of the Microsoft’s tablet has been refined to a great extent and now, you can tilt it to as far as 150 degrees that makes it easy for the tablet to sit on the lap or any surface and comfortable to use the screen. Previously, it wasn’t the case. It used to be a hassle to work with the tablet.
Windows button has been shifted to the shorter side of the bezel. Developers believe that the users are fond of holding their tablets in a portrait mode. With the Windows button on that particular location, it will be more comfortable for the users to use it when required.
Pro 3 has two ports—USB and mini DisplayPort on the same side of the tablet with a proprietary power port. You can spot a power button on the left side of the top edge and volume controls on the left side. Surface Pro 3 weighs 1.76 pounds, but with the Type Cover it goes to 2.4 pounds.
The dimension of Pro 3 is 11.45 x 7.8 x 0.36 inches and with Type Cover, it becomes 0.56 inches thicker.
There is no doubt about the fact that Pro 3 has screen larger than the previous versions. Also, it has better resolution of 2160×1440.
As far as heat is concerned, there is an improvement in the efficiency of the fans when compared to that of the previous versions. After a Hulu video was streamed, we measured the upper back of the tablet to be 102 degrees and the lower back of the tablet was at 95 degrees. Both the temperatures are more than the threshold temperature.
After playing ‘Asphalt 8: Airborne’ for 10 minutes, we noticed a shoot up of temperature to 109 degrees. Heat produced is way beyond, which might not be favourable for all kinds of users.
This device is powered by 1.9-GHz Intel Core i5-4300U processor. It has one 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. With SSD, Windows 8 could boot in 17 seconds. Let us not forget the file transfer test—Pro 3 could duplicate 4.97 GB of multimedia files in 35 seconds.
On the battery test, it lasted for 7 hours and 27 minutes with internet surfing over Wi-Fi and the brightness was kept at 150 nits. It scored higher than average on this test.
